Elon Musk Slams EU After X Faces Major Fine, Says Bloc “Should Be Abolished”

Elon Musk has launched one of his harshest criticisms yet of the European Union, declaring that the bloc “should be abolished” after regulators issued a substantial fine against his social media platform, X. The penalty—imposed under the EU’s sweeping digital enforcement rules—has intensified a long-running feud between Musk and Brussels over moderation standards and platform accountability.

Penalty Issued Under Strict Digital Services Rules

EU officials confirmed that the fine was levied under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which governs how major online platforms handle illegal content, misinformation, and user safety. According to regulators, X had repeatedly failed to meet transparency obligations and take adequate action on flagged harmful content.
The Commission stated that “all large platforms must comply equally” and denied that X was being unfairly singled out.

Musk Calls EU ‘Anti-Free Speech’

In a series of posts on X, Musk accused EU leaders of using regulation as a political weapon.
He wrote that the EU “pretends to protect users but is actually censoring democratic discourse” and went on to say the bloc “should be abolished for the good of Europe.”
The comments triggered a storm of reactions, with some users praising Musk’s bluntness while others denounced the statement as irresponsible.

EU Officials Push Back Strongly

European policymakers swiftly responded, defending the regulatory framework.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said Musk’s remarks would have “no impact” on the enforcement process and emphasized that digital compliance “is not optional.”
Members of the European Parliament also weighed in, calling the comment “dangerous rhetoric from a powerful tech CEO.”

Experts Warn of Widening Rift Between Tech and Regulators

Policy analysts say the dispute underscores a broader global struggle between tech giants and governments over the limits of online speech and platform responsibility.
Some experts believe Musk’s escalating criticism may influence how other tech companies approach EU regulations, while others suggest it could invite further scrutiny of X.

Future of X in Europe Could Be at Stake

While the fine alone is not expected to force operational changes, repeated violations could expose X to even harsher penalties—including restrictions on operating within the EU.
