Airtel Starts Dual 5G Shift in India, Paving Path for 5G Advanced Era

Bharti Airtel has initiated a nationwide transition to a dual 5G network architecture, marking a crucial step in India’s evolution toward 5G Advanced. The operator is upgrading both its Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) 5G layers to enhance performance, efficiency, and compatibility with upcoming next-generation services.

🔶 Why a Dual 5G Network Matters Now

The dual architecture allows Airtel to operate NSA and SA 5G simultaneously, ensuring smooth migration while delivering improved user experience. NSA relies on existing 4G infrastructure, while SA enables ultra-low latency and network slicing — essential for industrial IoT, automation, and advanced enterprise solutions.

This strategy prepares the network for upcoming innovations such as AI-powered connectivity, immersive media, AR/VR-driven education, and next-level mobile gaming.

🔶 Deployment Begins Across Key Urban Circles

According to internal rollout updates, Airtel has started the dual-network transition in metro and high-traffic zones, where 5G adoption has been rising sharply. The operator is optimizing its mid-band and sub-GHz spectrum resources to ensure balanced coverage, especially indoors where 5G performance has been inconsistent for many users.

The smooth integration of existing infrastructure is expected to reduce service interruptions during the rollout.

🔶 Better Speeds, Lower Latency, and Wider Coverage Expected

The new setup promises:

  • More consistent 5G speeds, especially during peak hours

  • Enhanced indoor penetration using improved spectrum allocation

  • Lower latency, unlocking real-time applications

  • Better stability for data-heavy platforms like streaming and cloud gaming

Enterprise customers are likely to experience major benefits as Airtel prepares to offer network slicing and edge computing solutions under the 5G Advanced umbrella.

🔶 Preparing the Ground for 5G Advanced Rollout

5G Advanced — considered the mid-generation evolution between 5G and 6G — will bring higher spectral efficiency, energy-optimized networks, and massive IoT expansion. Airtel’s current upgrades are designed to support these features without requiring drastic hardware changes later.

The operator is also modernizing its radio equipment in partnership with global vendors, aligning with India’s push toward more efficient telecom networks.

🔶 What Customers Can Expect in Coming Months

While Airtel has not announced a specific 5G Advanced launch timeline, the ongoing upgrades signal that the transition may begin in phases starting next year. Users in upgraded zones may notice gradually improved speed stability, especially indoors, along with reduced latency during online gaming and video calls.
